What is SRS and SRT?
SRS and SRT is a non-surgical radiation therapy used for treating functional abnormalities as well as small tumors of the brain. This therapy is able to deliver precisely-targeted radiation in less high-dose treatments than that in traditional therapy, which helps in preserving healthy tissues. When SRS is used to treat tumors, this is known as stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Both SRS and SBRT are generally done on an outpatient basis. SRS and SRT is used to treat various types of brain tumors such as malignant and benign, metastatic, primary and single/ multiple, residual tumor cells after surgery, orbital, intracranial, and base-of-skull tumor, trigeminal neuralgia, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), etc. Both SRS depends on several technologies like highly focused gamma-ray and x-ray beams. SRT uses multiple photon radiation beams, and also deliver a high dose of radiation to localized lesions, applying frameless and frame-based techniques.
SRS and SRT (Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Radiotherapy) are not diseases, but rather advanced forms of radiation therapy used to treat a variety of conditions such as;
Brain tumors: SRS is commonly used for small, solitary brain tumors, both benign and malignant. It can also be used for recurrent tumors after surgery or radiation therapy.
Vascular malformations: These are abnormal collections of blood vessels in the brain that can cause seizures or bleeding.
Trigeminal neuralgia: This is a chronic pain condition affecting the fifth cranial nerve in the face.
Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT):
Body tumors: SRT is increasingly used for tumors outside the brain, particularly in the lungs, liver, spine, and prostate. It is most commonly used for small, early-stage tumors.
Palliative care: SRT can be used to relieve symptoms caused by advanced cancer, such as pain and bleeding.
Risk & Complications
Scalp and hair problems: The scalp may be irritated, red or sensitive at sites where the device is attached to the head during this treatment. In some cases, there can be temporary hair loss.
Fatigue: Fatigue and tiredness might be experienced for the first few weeks after SRS and SRT.
Swelling: Swelling inside the brain at or around the treatment site may lead to signs and symptoms likes nausea, headache and vomiting.
Preparation of Treatment
There are various things the patient needs to keep in mind for preparing for SRS and SRT. They should refrain from drinking or eating or using medication few hours before treatment. The patient needs to tell their doctor if there is a possibility they are pregnant or whether they are breastfeeding or if they are taking any oral medications and insulin to control diabetes. The patient is also advised to remain as healthy as possible during and before the treatment. They need to take a nourishing food, have enough sleep, drink too much water, strike a balance between rest and physical activities. Regular exercise and healthy diet can help reduce certain side effects of SRS and SRT.

Cost of the treatment
The average cost of SRS and SRT in India starts from $4500. SRS and SRT cost in India could vary from person to person depending on various factors, such as medical history, types of drugs used, health condition, stage of the cancer, experience and expertise of the doctor, type of the hospital and the city where the treatment is carried out. The cost of SRS and SRT in India is affordable compared to many other countries.
Recovery after SRS and SRT
In most cases, patients can resume most of their normal activities in 1-2 days after SRS and SRT. The neurology and neurosurgery team will monitor your health with CT and MRI during follow-ups. The patient needs to avoid vigorous activity for nearly one month. They will need weekly follow-up visits with the doctor for a few months to ensure they are healing well.
