What is Hydatid Cyst

Hydatid cyst of the liver is a parasitic infection caused by tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus. It is a harmful parasite transmitted from dogs to humans. Usually, this disease affects those who raise cattle or deal with cattle, such as during farming. Tapeworm eggs are transmitted to humans from contact with the feces of infected dogs, as their feces contain tapeworm eggs. Tapeworm eggs stick to the tail and hair around the anus of infected dogs, and these eggs are transferred to the hands by lifting or touching them. These eggs reach the mouth and enter the body by eating, drinking water, or just touching the mouth. At first, the patient does not feel this matter, and within seven weeks a membrane forms on the liver. In this disease, small cysts form inside the liver, and in most cases, these small cysts merge and enlarge. A cyst is a type of fluid collection that has a lid and is located within a specific solid organ. Cyst rupture can lead to death. Cysts can grow up to 2 cm, 4 cm, and 20 cm inside the liver.

After unsuccessful treatments from Turkey, Medanta gave me almost second life: Tabatha Haider, Iraq
My name Tabatha Haider from Iraq and I am 44 years old. When I was 18, I was addicted to drinking. For 5 years, I drank a lot and it results in liver cancer. I consult with my doctor in Turkey and they said I have cancerous cells inside my liver and they can spread from one body part to another. I started my treatment in Turkey but unfortunately, they weren’t able to cure my disease. I started searching for a good hospital in Turkey and even outside it. Eventually, I came to know there is a hospital in India name Medanta the Medicity through Marlin Medical Assistance. I went to India for my treatment.

Symptoms
Symptoms may appear long after the hydatid cyst has been infected, sometimes after months or years and sometimes there are no symptoms at all. If they occur, symptoms may include:
- Pain in the upper abdomen.
- Fever.
- Upset stomach.
- Diarrhea.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Stomach bloating.
- Lack of blood.
- Weakness and fatigue.

Jaundice: Increased pressure of the cysts can cause jaundice.
Hydatid disease can be fatal without medical treatment. The infected organ may fail or the cyst may rupture, causing death.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of hydatid disease may include:
- Medical history.
- Physical examination.
- X-ray examination {x-ray examination}.
- Ultrasound {Ultrasound}.
- CT scan.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.
- Examination of blood, urine, sputum, stool, or other body fluids if a hydatid cyst is suspected to have burst.
- Blood tests for antibodies to cysts.
Treatment
Surgery is the primary treatment for liver hydatid disease. Surgery can rupture the hydatid cyst and spread the tapeworm throughout the patient's body. To reduce this risk, your doctor may prescribe higher doses of albendazole along with surgery. This medication helps remove remaining tapeworm heads. However, there is a risk of recurrence. One in three people treated for liver hydatid disease develops the disease again and needs treatment again.
